Satwik-Ashwini won, Sindhu and Praneeth Hare at Thailand Open (lead-1)

Bangkok, January 12 (IANS). India’s mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa have reached the second round of the Thailand Open badminton tournament which began here on Tuesday but defending world champion PV Sindhu in women’s singles and B.V. in men’s singles. Sai Praneeth has been defeated.

Satwik and Ponnappa defeated Indonesia’s Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuel Vidjaja 21–11, 27–29, 21–16 in the first round.

The contest lasted one hour and 12 minutes. In the next round, Indian partners will face China’s Chang Tak Cheng and Nag Wing Yung. In the event of victory, the Indian pair will reach the quarter-finals.

Praneeth, who won a bronze medal in the World Championship last year, lost in the first round to Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharon. Wangcharon defeated Praneeth 21–16 21–10 in a 36-minute match.

It was the sixth match between the world’s 15th ranked Wangcharon and the 13th ranked Praneeth. Praneeth has won four times.

Sindhu, who won gold at the World Championships in August last year, was defeated by Mila Blychelt of Denmark in the first round. Bleichelt beat Indus 16-21, 26-24, 21-13 in an hour and 14 minutes match.

This was the fourth match between these two players. Prior to this, Sindhu has won on three occasions.

Meanwhile, two of India’s key players Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy have pulled out of the Thailand Open due to Corona. Badminton Association of India has also confirmed this.

BAI has said in its tweet that apart from Saina, Prannoy has also been found to be Corona positive. According to BAI, both the players will remain isolated in the hospital for the next 10 days.

This is the second time Saina and Prannoy have been found to be Corona positive. Last month, Saina was found to be Corona positive along with her husband and badminton player Parupalli Kashyap. Saina and Prannoy moved to Bangkok after being in Quarantine.

According to BAI, Kashyap has been kept quarantined in the hotel room due to Saina’s proximity and he has also withdrawn from the tournament.

Saina and Prannoy were to play their first round match on Tuesday.
