Sydney, 8 January (IANS) Rohit Sharma (26) and Shubman Gill (50) added 70 runs in India’s first innings in a 27-over partnership for the first wicket on the second day of the third Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground here. The first Indian opening pair in 11 years has managed to withstand more than the initial 20 overs outside Asia.
Rohit was out for a total of 70 and Gill’s wicket fell at a total of 86. Gill is the fourth young Indian to score 50 or more outside Asia.
“I understand that Gill is technically very sound,” Ravindra Jadeja said at a press conference after the second day’s play was over. He has the temperament of playing long innings. In such a situation, they need to get a good start. Today our openers added 70 runs, which is a good sign. It is expected that he will start from where he finished in the second innings.
In the first match of this series, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal started the innings but both could not even partnership for five overs. Agarwal started the innings with Gill in the second Test but Agarwal was dismissed early.
In the last year and 2018, Indian openers were seen struggling. In 2019, India tried a pair of three openers.
Similarly, in the first two Tests for India in 2018-19, Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay started the innings but in the second innings of the Adelaide Test, they were separated in 18.2 overs.
