Omar Khalid, a former student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), alleged before a Delhi court on Monday that a “media trial” was being conducted against him. Khalid also alleges that this is affecting his right to an independent and impartial hearing in the case related to the North East Delhi riots.
Let me tell you that in the case related to the riots in Khajuri Khas in February last year, when Khalid was presented to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar through video conferencing, he kept this point. He claimed that a section of the media also got a supplementary charge sheet filed in the case, even when he or his lawyer had not received a copy of it from the court.
Statements are being leaked selectively
Khalid alleged that the statements were being leaked selectively, disrupting his right to an independent hearing. Khalid also said that he has not signed any statement while in custody.
The court will hear the matter again on January 5. A supplementary charge-sheet was filed against him in this case on December 26 last year. Suspended AAP councilor Tahir Hussain is also an accused in this case. Khalid was arrested in the case in October last year. Earlier in September 2020, he was arrested under a strict Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in a case related to plotting riots.
