Fatorda (Goa), 3 January (IANS). ATK Mohun Bagan has regained the first position in the points table of the seventh season of Hero Indian Super League (ISL) by defeating Northeastern United FC 2–0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday. Mumbai City FC removed him from the spot a day earlier but now the defending champion has again become the table topper.
ATKMB scored a goal in the match in the 51st minute but the goal added to their account in the 58th minute was actually a suicide goal, and the goal was the result of a mistake by Highlanders captain Benjamin Lambot. This is ATKMB’s sixth win this season.
With this win ATKAB has 20 points from nine matches. Mumbai have 19 points from 8 matches. On the other hand, the Highlanders have 11 points from 9 matches and are ranked sixth in the points table. This is his second defeat of this season.
The first half ended with a goalless draw. ATK Mohun Bagan was ahead in the matter of possession of the ball. He put a shot on Tagaret while the Highlanders could not create a single chance. Both teams got two corners but none could convert them into goals.
Overall, this half was very tectonic. ATKMB created more chances and played quite aggressively this half. Some of the players of ATKMB showed commendable play but could not distinguish the post. During this time however the Highlanders remained focused on their defense and would be happy with their efforts.
There were three bookings in this half. ATKMB’s David Williams received a yellow card in the 25th minute while Subhashish Bose of the same team was booked in the 39th minute. The third yellow card was also awarded to ATKMB’s Carl McHugh in the 45th minute.
ATKMB got the fruits of the hard work done in the first half only at the beginning of the second half. In the 51st minute, Rai Krishna scored on a pass by Tiri via a diving header to put ATKAB ahead 1-0. The goal was scored on a corner kick which was taken by Idu Garcia.
This is Krishna’s sixth goal this season. He is now jointly ranked second in the list of players with the most goals.
ATK intensified the attack after the first goal. In the 58th minute, he made a good attack and in the boxing fiasco, the Belgian defender and captain Benjamin Lambot of Northeastern United FC scored against his own team. Mumbai’s team was ahead 2–0.
ATKMB’s Prabir Das got a yellow card in the 59th minute and the Highlanders made two changes in the 60th and 61st minutes. In the 63rd minute Federico Gallegho of the Highlanders got a yellow card. After that in the 66th minute, ATKMB took out Sahil Sheikh and took Pranay Haldhar inside. Haldhar was booked as soon as he arrived.
In the 71st minute, the Highlanders got a chance to score the first goal but luck did not support them. After this there was a round of changes but no part was scored. In this way, ATKMB has the distinction of being a table topper again with a resounding victory.
