London, 31 December (IANS). Three-time Grand Slam winner Britain’s Andy Murray has pulled out of the Del Rey Beach tennis tournament starting next week. Murray has stated that he is withdrawing from the tournament not because of injury but because of Corona.
According to the BBC report, former World No-1 Murray was given a wild card entry for the first tournament of the 2021 season – Del Rey Beach. “Because of the rise in the corona rate, I want to take the least risk before the Australian Open.”
Murray withdrew from the tournament held in Cologne, Germany in October this year. Murray had not landed on the court since then. But this month, he won his first win in two months by defeating Dan Evans in straight sets in the Brits Premier League tennis tournament.
Murray has been given a wild card for the first Grand-Slam Australian Open of the year, starting in Melbourne on 8 February. Murray, a five-time runner-up, lost to Spain’s Roberto Batista Agut in a five-set match in the first round of the Australian Open-2019.
Murray, 33, had played only seven official matches this year due to injury.
The Australian Open will start from 8 February and will run till 21 February. Due to Corona, this hard court event is being held in February instead of January.
